One study of 210 people with central obesity (excess belly fat), who were given Lactobacillus gasseri (a probiotic) every day. This single change saw them reduce belly fat by 8.5% over just 12 weeks. When they stopped the intake of Lactobacillus gasseri, they gained it back within 4 weeks.

Such studies continue to show the benefits of a healthy gut on weight management. This alone could be a good enough reason for most of the population no?

Improved Digestion

Guess what! The effects of probiotics on the digestive system have been even more widely researched.

Scientists have also concluded that probiotics can assist in combating the effects of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a very common digestive system disorder that affects between 10 – 15% of the US population. Symptoms of IBS include gas, diarrhea, and bloating.

Several studies have also shown that probiotics improve the conditions of those suffering from ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and other inflammatory bowel diseases. Considering the number of individuals suffering from such ailments, there is no wonder probiotics have become mainstream.

In addition to dealing with these unfortunately common issues, there is also strong evidence to indicate that probiotic supplements can provide relief to those suffering from antibiotic-associated diarrhea. This issue is common among those who have been taking antibiotics for longer periods of time. This occurs as the antibiotics kill off the natural bacteria in the gut (that the body needs to function smoothly), which changes the bacteria composition in the gut, allowing harmful bacteria to grow.

Although more research is needed, many experts within the field also believe that probiotic supplements can help fight Helicobacter pylori infections, one of the main causes of stomach cancer and ulcers.

As you can see, probiotics can play a pretty significant role in many of the gut-related issues facing society.

While weight management and digestion are potentially huge benefits that could affect the masses, probiotic supplements may also help reduce systemic inflammation, cholesterol levels, anxiety, and even clinical depression.

    Hi! After reading all the benefits taking probiotics bring us, I agree with you: the easiest part is really to take action. I’ll begin tonight taking 1 capsule before bedtime and in the morning 1 capsule when I get up.

    I wish all the difficulties we confront had such an easy fix as this. But having an easy fix encourages me to take action immediately.

    Do probiotics fight sugar? Not long ago I realized something crucial. When animal fats are consumed the unused calories accumulate around muscle where they can be burned off at a later date. But when sugar is consumed and not used it turns to fat and accumulates around organs where there is no muscle. This makes sugar accumulated fat very difficult to lose.

    Having said all of that, I realize that we still know relatively little about how our bodies work. your article is good in that it furthers knowledge.

      Garry, you are spot on as it relates to the ease at which simple sugars, vs fats and even more complex carbs are stored and used. Simple sugars really have little to no place in a healthy diet, with the exception of maybe post-workout in order to help fill muscle glycogen levels as quickly as possible. 

      As for probiotics and sugars…we would not say that they “fight” sugars, but they do assist with stabilizing blood sugar levels. In addition, there is research showing that probiotics can help with sugar “cravings” as well.

    I’ve always wondered about the topic of probiotics. This post gave me the answer in a clear and concise manner. I had a vague idea that the intake of good bacteria was beneficial to ones health. But not to the extent you have shown. 

    Many years ago I was an independent representative for a nutritional supplement company and ended up spending a small fortune each month on their products as I wanted to experience the benefits of all of them, After a while I had to quit for financial reasons. 

    It appears that taking probiotics to improve ones health is the tip of the iceberg and that there is more that is necessary. Can I ask if you had to pick only one type of pill to take each day would it be a good vitamin, mineral and antioxidant pill or a probiotic pill? Or maybe something else entirely?

      Edwin, to be very brutally honest and transparent, if we had to choose just one recommendation for all adults, it would easily be Omega-3-fatty acids. Omegas have long surpassed even the multivitamin, so this would be our #1 choice.
